Established since 1996 and with over 10,000 employees, the Environment Agency’s responsibilities include:

  • Regulating major industry and waste
  • Treatment of contaminated land
  • Water quality and resources
  • Fisheries Inland river, estuary and harbour navigations
  • Conservation and ecology
  • Managing the risk of flooding from main rivers, reservoirs, estuaries and the sea

The Challenge

The Environment Agency has a large internal plant fleet holding, but requires additional plant on a national basis to ensure the organisation’s operational teams have access to the latest, safest and most environmentally efficient equipment. The contract was put out to tender and a number of leading hire companies tendered for the work. It was critical that the chosen supplier was able to satisfy and exceed the Environment Agency’s operational and environmental requirements and targets.

The Solution

Following a successful tender process, A-Plant was awarded a sole supply contract for non-operated and operated plant to the Environment Agency. We secured the National Plant Hire contract for three years with an option to extend up to a further year. As part of the agreement, we provided a full range of equipment and services, covering excavators, pumps, telehandlers, rollers, accommodation and generators of various sizes. The equipment is used on short, medium and long term hire with some equipment needing to be available on a 24/7 hire basis.

Demonstrating our commitment to the successful running of this contract, we invested in a fleet of excavators that use bio-degradable hydraulic oil. In fact, in the first four months of the contract, we spent over £1.4 million with JCB on this equipment, due to its ability to reduce emissions by 95% and fuel consumption by 22%.In line with Environment Agency requirements, we also invested in a larger excavator in the >13T range, a first for A-Plant. The JCB JS130 offers environmental efficiencies such as reduced CO2 emissions and uses bio-degradable oil, which is a requirement on the Agency’s sensitive sites such as harbours and sea defences.

A-Plant has also partnered with its supply chain to meet the EA’s diverse rental equipment requirements.

As part of this process we pre-qualify all partners to ensure that all organisations used to support the contract ensuring they are responsible businesses, operating using the highest standards - This includes checks on QEHS, financial standing, geographical coverage and innovation.

To ensure a successful operation we have 2 implanted supply partners Flannery Plant Hire and Land & Water that sit alongside our EA Hire Desk at the Contact Centre in Birmingham to ensure orders are processed efficiently and on hand to offer specialist advice.

The Results

Since the contract started, we have exceeded our KPIs and the A-Plant Customer Experience Team is sending out customer surveys with every hire, to help identify both exceptional service and areas of concern, allowing us to address and rectify them as quickly as possible.

  • 99% of all deliveries have been made within one hour of the agreed delivery time
  • 98% of all collections have been made within 72 hours of the requested collection time
  • 100% of all equipment supplied has been legally compliant with all relevant certificates
