Award Winning Apprentices at A-Plant

Several of A-Plant’s Construction Plant Maintenance Apprentices have received special awards from Reaseheath College in recognition of their work ethic and outstanding contribution to study.

A-Plant’s 3rd year Plant Maintenance Apprentices attended an awards ceremony at the college to celebrate the completion of their three-year qualification. Reaseheath College, in Nantwich, Cheshire, is A-Plant’s sole training provider for the company’s Plant Maintenance Apprentices. The structure of the Apprenticeship Programme allows A-Plant Apprentices to balance off-the-job training with in-house training, ensuring they experience real life exposure in the construction industry whilst receiving supported learning.

At the awards ceremony, Daniel Pritchard from A-Plant’s Smethwick depot was named the Best A-Plant Apprentice. Alan Cage from A-Plant’s Birmingham depot won the Banner Plant Award for Endeavour and in the Peers awards, whereby students voted for their fellow students, Jake Ridley from the Birmingham depot was declared the Apprentices’ Apprentice. Brett Parkes from A-Plant Birmingham was runner-up in the Apprentices’ Apprentice award and Brett also won the Most Improved Apprentice award in the Peers awards.

Reaseheath College Programme Leader Simon Keen said: “I would like to congratulate the A-Plant Apprentices on their achievements. They have a phenomenal work ethic and are a real credit to A-Plant. I am sure they will continue to serve A-Plant well in years to come and will provide the next generation of highly skilled employees. I have no doubt they have a very bright future ahead of them.”

Apprentices play a key role at A-Plant and last year the company won the overall Apprentice Large Employer of the Year Award across the whole of Great Britain at the CITB Managing Agency Apprentice Awards. A-Plant was pitched against companies across the construction sector that employ and train individuals through Apprenticeship Programmes.

A-Plant has recently announced the largest ever intake of Apprentices on the company’s Apprenticeship Programme. In September, A-Plant will be recruiting 150 new Apprentices across its business, which will bring the total number of A-Plant Apprentices to over 250. This is a huge increase from the 2014 intake, when 39 new Apprentices were recruited.

A-Plant’s Apprenticeship Programme is one of the most successful and sought after in the hire industry, demonstrated by the fact that A-Plant received over 1,200 applications for the 39 places last year. In 2014, A-Plant invested over £800,000 in the recruitment and training of Apprentices and the company estimates that investment this year will be in excess of £1 million.

The majority of A-Plant Apprentices follow the three-year Plant Maintenance Apprenticeship Programme whereby Apprentices attend Reaseheath College on residential block release. The A-Plant Apprenticeship Programme also covers many other disciplines such as Drivers, Customer Services, Human Resources, Finance and Credit Control. This year, three additional new Apprentice streams have been launched, namely Digital Media Marketing, Welding and Fabrication for the Eve business and Mechanical Engineering for the PSS Hire business.

A-Plant is also an active member of the 5% Club, an industry group formed to create momentum behind the recruitment of Apprentices and Graduates into the workforce. The 5% Club’s members are committed to ensuring that at least 5% of their workforce are Apprentices, Graduates on a formal scheme or sponsored students and that they will report publicly on progress towards that goal.
