National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC)

The £150 million National Automotive Innovation Centre is a new 33,000m2 development currently under construction at the University of Warwick. Scheduled to open in Spring 2017, it will become the hub for Jaguar Land Rover’s research and will comprise workshops, laboratories and virtual engineering suites, enabling a full range of design, visualisation and prototyping activities. Not only will the new facility enable Jaguar Land Rover to create key technologies, it will also deliver wider benefits to the UK automotive industry and 1,000 people will work at the NAIC once fully open.

Customer Name

Balfour Beatty

Project and Location

National Automotive Innovation Centre (NAIC) in Coventry

Value

£24 million contract awarded to Balfour Beatty Engineering Services (BBES) and £70 million contract awarded to Balfour Beatty Construction

Duration

12 month contract to BBES (12 month contract previously awarded to Balfour Beatty Construction) Equipment Supplied: Tools, Low Level Access and Consumables

The Challenge

Both Balfour Beatty Engineering Services and Balfour Beatty Construction are working together on the site and A-Plant was contacted to review what we could offer in terms of an on-site store or consignment stock. Due to the high volume of contractors on-site requiring equipment (approximately 200 people per day), it was felt that an on-site hire facility would provide a convenient and efficient option of providing instant access to equipment including tools and low level access products. As well as Balfour Beatty employees, there are a number of other sub-contractors working on-site and a hire facility would minimise downtime and losses whilst providing Balfour Beatty with the peace of mind that the equipment being used is high quality and in compliance with Balfour Beatty specifications. Challenges included there being limited space on-site for the hire facility due to the storage of other equipment and it was essential that the hire shop was fire rated.

The Solution

An on-site facility has been established within the turnstiles of the PPE zone of the site. This means that Balfour Beatty and the company’s sub-contractors don’t need to leave the site to source equipment and in turn, Balfour Beatty can be assured of the quality of the equipment. The hire facility was specially made to have doors on the gable ends to enable easy access due to the limited space available. In order to ensure the provision of the safest and most innovative products for working at height and dust extraction, product trials were carried out with two key suppliers, Hilti and Pop-up.

The Result

The on-site facility has enabled Balfour Beatty Engineering Services, Balfour Beatty Construction and sub-contractors working on the project to have immediate access to equipment that is fully serviced and ready to go. The facility is fire rated and stocks a wide range of items for both hire and purchase, with the ability to take additional orders for other equipment such as temporary accommodation, powered access equipment and PPE.

“Right from our first meeting with A-Plant, we were confident that our needs would be met and that has proved to be the case. The on-site hire facility has proved to be a great help to both ourselves and our sub-contractors.I am extremely happy with the service received from A-Plant both on-site and from the Coventry Service Centre and I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending them. All equipment is received on time and in excellent working order.”
