London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games
The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are, without question, A-Plant’s most successful single project in the company’s history.

We had two dedicated on-site hire facilities on the Olympic Park during the construction phase and then went on to win a contract with Olympics organiser LOCOG to supply equipment for both the opening and closing ceremonies. Furthermore, we were awarded the Traffic Management contract for London 2012, involving the supply of equipment for Olympic venues both in the capital and nationally.
The £9 billion, 246 hectare London 2012 Olympic Park site is the UK’s largest ever construction project and hired plant and equipment played a vital role in keeping the project on track. Building a new Olympic Stadium and wider Olympic Park is a huge undertaking and London 2012 was no exception. The opportunity to create an iconic Olympic London landmark was at the heart of the 2012 bid and sustainability was a key factor.
A-Plant was firmly at the hub of construction work on the Olympic Park with a dedicated on-site hire facility as Lead Partner of a ‘Powerhouse Consortium’ known as the Hire Alliance. A-Plant joined forces with ‘Best of Breed’ hire companies and manufacturers to form the Hire Alliance and provide Choice, Service and best Value to Contractors and Sub-Contractors in the provision of Plant, Tools, Builders’ Merchants fixings, Consumables and first class Training. Within the two-storey Hire Alliance on-site facility located on the South Plaza of the Olympic Park, A-Plant had a trade counter and the building housed a total of seven training rooms, product test and demonstration areas and a substantial workshop and storage area. A-Plant also had its very own additional one acre storage compound close to the Hire Alliance on-site facility, which was unique on the Olympic Park and allowed A-Plant to store a vast range of equipment - in fact, a stock holding of more than £1.6 million worth.
We utilised our experience with the Hire Alliance on-site facility to provide a further hire facility on the Olympic Park, on the Athletes’ Village to offer contractors and sub-contractors a competitive range of Plant, Tools and other equipment. The Village provided accommodation for around 17,000 athletes and officials from all around the world.
Largely due to the demonstration of our on-site capabilities, we subsequently won contracts to supply Traffic Management and equipment for both the opening and closing ceremonies. We supplied hundreds of pieces of kit, including Portable Toilets, Generators, Tower Lights, Forklifts, Air Conditioning Units and Accommodation Units and were able to provide a total one-stop solution.
Our A-Plant Lux Traffic Control & Management division also supplied, took down and collected over 20,000 Cones, in excess of 3,500 Signs, 2,500 Flashing Cone Lamps, 6 Kilometres of Crowd Barrier, 7 Kilometres of Water Filled Barrier, hundreds of Delineators and Strong Wall Barrier, plus an endless amount of other items including the unusual like 3 sets of Boom Gates for the Triathlon at Hyde Park. We also managed LOCOG’s hire vehicle requests, such as mini buses, cans, vans and 4x4’s all over the country for different Olympic venues.
Helping Create the Olympic Legacy
Throughout the project, we were firmly committed to promoting Health and Safety best practice, innovation, job creation, equality and sustainability, reflecting the lasting legacy created by the Games. For instance:
- At least 90% of the building materials used to construct our on-site Hire Alliance facility could be recycled and re-used during the decommissioning stage
- In order to reduce emissions from our delivery fleet, we trialled the use of electric and gas vehicles to significantly lower the environmental impact of equipment deliveries and collections. Our on-site presence was supported by a strategically placed network of multiple depots across the capital, allowing us to make rapid deliveries to Olympic sites
- As part of National Apprenticeship Week, A-Plant’s investment in Apprentices was recognised by the ODA for employing a total of 26 Apprentices through the Hire Alliance on and around the Olympic Park for London 2012
- We delivered over 300 training courses to high profile contractors and sub-contractors working on the Olympic Park. The majority of the courses delivered were accredited by the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) and the Prefabricated Access Suppliers’ and Manufacturers’ Association (PASMA)
- We supported an ODA initiative called the People Matter Leadership Programme. A number of A-Plant colleagues helped to plan, prepare and run a safe and enjoyable one week holiday camp for 24 disadvantaged children aged between 7 and 11 years
- In line with the ODA’s Sustainability Policy and efforts to transport materials by water, A-Plant helped to make history with the first barge delivery on the Olympic Park when our JCB Telehandler was lifted by a crane from the barge
